CURRICULUM

Born in Santiago de Compostela (1962), where he later graduated and obtained his doctorate in Biological Sciences (1990). After obtaining his doctorate he took up a post at the National Institute of Health in Bethseda (MD, USA), where he worked for almost six years with Dr. H. Westphal on the generation of mouse models, both transgenic with oncogenes and mutants derived from growth factors such as the Glial Cell-line Derived Neurotrophic Factor (GDNF), for the study of tumoural genesis and embryonic development. In 1996 he joined the Laboratory of Dr. Flora de Pablo in the Centre for Biological Research of the CSIC (CIB, Madrid), where he focused his studies on the area of IGFs and LIF during the fetal development of the lung.

In 1999, as a FIS researcher (Health Research Fund) in the Research Unit of Merida Hospital (Badajoz), he set up the Laboratory of Molecular Biology with molecular diagnostic techniques to back up clinical diagnostics and carried out research on the evaluation of growth factor receptors in diverse types of cancer. Since April 2002 he has worked as a Ramon y Cajal researcher in the Cancer Research Centre (CIC) in Salamanca, where he headed a group for the study of mechanisms of action of growth factors and their receptors in the embryonic development of the lung, as well as their implication in non-microcytic lung cancer. He has published numerous articles in international scientific journals with a high impact factor, forming postgraduate students and supervising several doctoral theses.
