Graduate in Chemistry (1997) and PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (2004) from the University of La Rioja, Spain (UR). She obtained two scholarships linked to two research projects from Health Ministry of La Rioja Government, and a “Grant to research” from the UR (1997-2000). She was awarded a Research Personnel Training (FPI) grant (2000-2004) to get her PhD in the UR under supervision of Prof Carmen Torres and Dr Myriam Zarazaga. She worked as R&D project technician from Ministry of Education and Science of Spain (2004-2008). In March 2008 she moved to Microbiology Molecular Area at Center of Biomedical Research of La Rioja (CIBIR) as postdoctoral researcher (agreement UR-CIBIR). Since January 2017 she is the Principal Investigator (PI) of the Microbiology Molecular Area group.

She performed a six-month pre-doctoral stay at the Microbiology Laboratory in the Hospital Clínic (Barcelona, Spain) under supervision of Dr Jordi Vila (2003), and a postdoctoral stay at the Louvain Drug Research Institute (LDRI) in the Catholic University of Lovain (Brussels, Belgium) (2015).

Dr Sáenz has participated in 26 research projects, being PI in 6 of them (5 national and one international). She is co-author of 99 scientific indexed publications (h scopus index: 31) (see Publications links), 11 book chapters and more than 160 communications in national and international congresses. She has supervised three PhD thesis (two obtained the “Extraordinary PhD Award”, two with European /international mention), six master projects and multiple student trainings. Currently, she is codirecting four theses, collaborates in university teaching activities in UR, and in scientific activities with national and international research groups. She is a member of several scientific societies. She has experience in organization of R&D activities, and transference, innovation and technology training.

She has been awarded a number of competitive grants and projects (“Grant to research” from the UR, FPI-UR, FIS-Instituto de Salud Carlos III projects, postdoctoral mobility fellowship from the Spanish Society of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology (SEIMC)) and her thesis were awarded by the “Extraordinary PhD Award” (2006).
