Josune García studied Veterinary Medicine at the University of Zaragoza, where she graduated in 1999. After graduation, she worked for 6 months as the responsible veterinarian in a sheep farm of "Rasa Aragonesa" (Gabinete Tecnico Veterinario, Zaragoza, Spain) allowing her to gaining considerable expertise in sheep livestock.

From 2000 to 2003 she received several grants to study facial eczema disease in a sheep population from Northern Spain working for Neiker Tecnalia (Spain). Then, she got a Predoctoral Scholarship from INIA (Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Tecnología Agraria y Alimentaria), which was supervised by Dr Ana Hurtado Esgueva and Dr Ana Garcia Perez, also from Neiker Tecnalia. Her PhD research focused on the molecular identification of piroplasm species in the Ixodida populations, livestock, and wildlife of the Basque Country, providing her with an excellent background in multiple biological disciplines including molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, and genetics. From 2007 to 2008 she performed postdoctoral training in the laboratory for the diagnosis of Avian Influenza from the Basque Government and in the epidemiological study of the bluetongue disease in the Basque Country (Neiker Tecnalia).

In 2008 she joined Dr. Alfredo Martinez´s team in the Oncology Area of the CIBIR. Her work is focused now on the study of new anti-angiogenic therapies in the fight against cancer.

During her undergraduate and graduate studies, she received several academic awards such as a Socrates-Erasmus scholarship, Training fellowships for young researchers and technologists from the Basque Government, Scholarship for conducting Doctoral thesis in the enterprise from the Industry department of Basque Government, Predoctoral Scholarship from INIA, and Extraordinary PhD award.

Results from her research have been published in high impact journals.
